Why Sectional Times Lie (and How to Fix Them)

If you’ve spent any time looking at horse racing form guides, you know the allure of the sectional time. A horse powers through a final 600m in sub-33 seconds, and the immediate temptation is to mark it down as a future group-race winner.
It feels objective. It feels mathematical. It feels like a shortcut to beating the market.
However, as speed figures pioneer Andrew Beyer famously established in his foundational works, raw times on a clock mean remarkably little without standardisation. In modern horse racing, treating raw sectional splits as gospel is one of the fastest ways to burn a hole in your bankroll.
To turn sectional analysis into a genuine betting edge, you need to understand the fundamental mechanics that separate casual clockers from professional handicappers.
Modern markets are well aware of speed figures and pace profiles, so using this data in isolation will merely see you replicating the market. There is no edge in doing that.
Raw splits mislead without context.
In his landmark book Modern Pace Handicapping, Tom Brohamer a proponent of the Sartin Methodology, demonstrated that race pace is dynamic, not linear. A fractional time cannot be judged in a vacuum; it must be judged against a Par—the benchmark sectional split expected for a specific class of horse, over a specific distance, on a specific track condition.
Imagine two races over 1200m on the same day:
Race A (Maiden Class): Settles into a crawling opening 600m. A backmarker flies home in 33.50 seconds.
Race B (Group 1 Class): Run at a blistering opening pace. The winner guts out a final 600m in 34.20 seconds.
If you rely solely on raw sectionals, you might conclude that the Maiden runner possesses superior late acceleration to the Group 1 winner.
Without par context, you miss the energy expenditure curve.
The Maiden runner was able to sprint fast because they were allowed to conserve energy early. The Group 1 winner ran a "slower" late split because they expended massive kinetic energy maintaining a high early pace. A raw 33.50s split in a slowly-run race might actually be below par for a horse that spent no energy early, while a 34.20s split under pressure could be significantly above par.
2. The Last 600m Means Different Things at Different Tempos
James Quinn, one of handicapping’s great educators, consistently stressed the relationship between pace pressure and race finishing energy.
The final 600m of a race is not a standalone measure of a horse's acceleration—it is the direct mathematical remainder of the energy expended in the first half of the race.
This creates two distinct scenarios when evaluating a late split:
High Early Tempo (Above Par Pace): When the early leaders set a high pace, the race transforms into a test of stamina and fatigue resistance. A horse making up ground from the rear is running into a wall of tiring horses. Their final 600m split might look visually impressive, but it is often an optical illusion caused by the frontrunners collapsing.
Low Early Tempo (Below Par Pace): When the frontrunners walk, the race becomes a sprint-and-dash over the final 600m. Every horse in the field saves energy. Because the field stays condensed, horses trapped at the rear face a severe spatial deficit—they simply run out of racetrack to catch leaders who still have a full tank of gas.

3. Surface Physics: Turf vs. Dirt & All-Weather Sectionals
One of the biggest mistakes handicappers make when switching between tracks is applying turf sectional rules to dirt or synthetic surfaces. The physical properties of these surfaces completely invert energy distribution profiles.
Surface physics invert energy profiles. Dirt and all-weather tracks demand early power, turf rewards (relative) late accelration (usually less deceleration).
Without context, raw times are not directly comparable from one race to the next

On Turf, horses can conserve energy behind cover and unleash explosive acceleration because the surface offers firm traction without excessive drag.
On Dirt and All-Weather, the surface creates continuous drag and biomechanical fatigue. These races are almost always won by horses with superior early speed and high fatigue resistance. A "fast" closing sectional on dirt usually indicates that the early pace was completely absurd rather than the closer possessing elite talent.
4. What is a "Fast" Sectional in a Slow Race Actually Worth?
This brings us to one of the most common traps in modern form analysis: The Flawed Flier.
When a race is run slowly early, punters often jump on horses that record the fastest closing 600m or 200m splits. The reasoning goes: "If they can sprint that fast, they'll dominate next time."
In reality, a fast sectional in a slowly-run race is often worth very little. When horses cruise through the early stages, they consume minimal glycogen stores. Almost every horse in the field retains the physical capacity to sprint sharply for 400m when fresh. The true test of a racehorse is not how fast they can sprint from a standing start, but how fast they can sprint after paying a high energy toll early.
The Solution: H K Speed King’s Sectional Efficiency Index
To bridge the gap between raw splits, pace context, surface dynamics, and energy output, the Sectional Efficiency Index (SEI) was developed.
Rather than taking raw sectional times at face value, the Sectional Efficiency Index mathematically measures how efficiently a horse distributes its energy across the entire race duration relative to surface-specific class standards.
How SEI Upgrades Your Form Analysis:
Normalises Pace Distortions: SEI automatically penalises late splits that were inflated by slow early tempos, preventing you from over-betting "false" closers.
Adjusts for Surface Drag: SEI applies different weighting algorithms depending on whether the race was run on Turf or Dirt/All-Weather, properly valuing early exertion on high-drag surfaces.
Rewards Hidden Merit: It identifies horses that ran seemingly modest closing sectionals, but did so after absorbing brutal mid-race pressure—highlighting horses primed to win when returning to a normal tempo.
Quantifies Energy Distribution: Instead of guessing whether a fast last 600m was impressive, SEI calculates the exact efficiency ratio of early effort versus late finish against the class par.

Summary Checklist for Reading Sectionals Beyond the Clock
Next time you look at a sectional report, run through this checklist before placing a bet:
✅ What surface are they on? Expect negative splits on turf, but look for early power on dirt/all-weather.
✅ What was the early pace? Compare the first half of the race to the track/class par.
✅ Is the late split inflated? If the early pace was slow, deduct merit from fast closing splits.
✅ Did the horse absorb pressure? Reward horses that ran solid sectionals after setting or chasing an above-par early tempo.
✅ Apply the SEI Lens: Look past the raw seconds on the clock and evaluate the horse's total energy efficiency.
It's time to start thinking beyond the clock.
